Top travel tips
Whether your apartment is on Lake Geneva in the countryside or in one of the beautiful cities, you should not miss a trip to Geneva. The city is particularly famous for the Jet d'eau fountain, which sprays a water fountain up to 140 metres high at the harbour. Also worth seeing is the cathedral St. Peter, the botanical garden and birthplace of Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
2. To the landmark of the lakeAt the eastern end of Lake Geneva, not far from Montreux, is the Chillon Castle on a rocky promontory. The building was first mentioned in a document in 1005 and is now regarded as the most frequently visited historical building in Switzerland. You can also reach the castle by boat via the Château-de-Chillon landing stage.
3. Visit wrecks during the diveThe paddle steamer Hirondelle sank off La Tour-de-Peilz in 1862 and is now about 50 metres below the surface. Therefore the shipwreck can only be explored while diving. Divers will also find five other smaller boat wrecks off Hermance. The underwater rock face in front of Chillon Castle is also a popular excursion destination for underwater researchers.
The world hit "Smoke on the Water" tells of the fire at the casino in Montreux during a Frank Zappa concert, which the band members of Deep Purple observed from their hotel.
Things to know
The many water masses of the lake influence the climate of the surroundings. This results in particularly mild winters here, but somewhat cooler summers. In autumn, local fog forms on and around the lake, creating unique mystical photographic motifs.
World cultural heritage at the lakeSince 1850, numerous prehistoric pile dwellings have been discovered along the shore and in Lake Geneva, which are now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The pile dwellings were erected from the 5th to the 1st century BC and served at that time as protection against floods, enemy tribes and predators.
