Only two kilometres from the Albanian coast, the island of Corfu ranks third after Rhodes and Crete among the most popular Greek holiday islands. Corfu does not enjoy a great popularity with culture lovers for nothing, as the island is extremely rich in historical sights and embodies in many places the primeval Greece. A day trip to the capital of the island is especially worthwhile. In addition to churches worth seeing such as the cathedral Agiu lakovu ke Christophoru, built in 1553, two Venetian fortifications await you there, just waiting to be visited and used as a vantage point. There is also the Archaeological Museum, which exhibits the impressive finds that have been excavated on the island in recent decades. These finds come from the ancient harbour town of Kassiopi and the Angelokastro castle complex, from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Ionian Sea. An at least as impressive experience is a detour into the caves near the village of Loutses in the northeast, where you will find bizarre stalactite formations as well as traces of our ancestors who once settled there. Your holiday in Corfu will be rounded off by a visit to one of the traditional taverns, where the genuine island cuisine will be served. These include specialities such as the crispy fried anchovies (marides), the fresh smooth shark and the grilled offal skewers with garlic and fragrant thyme.

The question of the best time to travel to Corfu can only be answered in connection with the travel plan. If you want to relax on the beach and enjoy the water sports, you can book your holiday apartment for the period between June and October. Hiking and cycling is possible from April, thanks to numerous hours of sunshine and very stable weather, and November is also suitable for extensive exploratory tours.

Near the small village of Pelekas in the west of the island, on a mountain ridge, there rises a wonderfully situated viewing platform with the promising name "Kaiser's Throne". Climb up the steps and reward yourself with a 360-degree panorama of the entire island. About 10 km from Corfu stands the Achilleion, the summer residence of Empress Sissi, to whom she often came until her death. Emperor Wilhelm II then bought the property and spent his holidays here. Today's museum is worth a visit and shows the life of the royal inhabitants with impressive exhibits, such as curious chairs, magnificent furniture and artistic paintings. Also the fantastic garden is worth a walk, in which there are many Greek statues! If you want to spend one or two days at the sea and beach, you are spoilt for choice. Particularly beautiful are the miles of sandy beaches at Kassiopi, Almiros or Acharavi. Thanks to the crystal clear waters off the coast, the island's diving schools are booming. If you feel like exploring the fascinating underwater world, you can do so on site. In addition to trial dives, some diving schools also offer real highlights such as night diving for advanced divers or a scooter diving course for beginners. At least as exciting is exploring the numerous ancient, medieval and modern wrecks that you can dive alongside an experienced guide.

The monastery Panagía Theotóku tis Paleokastrítsas sits high above the sea and is a beautiful old church very close to Corfu. The building, built in the Middle Ages, is still inhabited and maintained by three monks. Walk in the gardens, chat with the clergy and enjoy the sun in this idyllic place.
