Location and orientation
The capital of the island of Sylt is very centrally located and was a town until 2008. Westerland belongs to Schleswig-Holstein and is located in the district of Nordfriesland. If you arrive from Flensburg, you have to drive about 74 kilometres to reach your holiday destination. The city of Kiel is 134 kilometres away from Westerland and the metropolis of Hamburg 186 kilometres.
Discover the flora in the hinterlandSince Sylt originally belonged rather to the barren, treeless landscape areas, a targeted afforestation was started in the middle of the 19th century. This is why today you will find the southern grove and the forest area Friedrichshain behind Westerland, where not only many trees thrive, but also the so-called Syltrose blooms.
Good accessibility by car, ship or planeSylt is connected to the mainland via the Westerdamm, so you do not need a ferry to get there by car. There is also a car ferry that takes you from Sylt to the Danish neighbouring island Rømø. If you wish to travel by plane, you can almost walk from the airport to Westerland, which is only three kilometres from the town centre.
Travelers and Activities
The fine sandy main beach of Westerland lies directly in the city centre. It has a promenade with cafés, small shops and several food stalls. At the beach you can rent a beach chair or listen to music in the beach shell. There are special areas for children and water sports enthusiasts, so that both don't get in each other's way when splashing and surfing.
Use flat paths for hikingOne of the most popular beach hiking trails runs from Westerland to Kampen. On the way, the fine sand under your feet and the fantastic view offer very special moments of remembrance. Another hiking route leads through the interior of the island to the Rantum basin. The paths of the 13 kilometre long route are easy to walk and therefore suitable for all age groups.
Water sports enthusiasts are very welcomeIn the separate beach area for water sports enthusiasts you can let yourself be carried by wind and waves or spend your time actively on the beach playing beach volleyball or beach soccer. In the water sports area you will also find a surf school and a large playground. In the summer there are also some entertaining events in this area, which ensure a wonderful time at the sea until late in the evening.
The German band "Die Ärzte" not only wrote a song with the title "Westerland", but also played their farewell concert at this place on 9 July 1988.

The Sylt Aquarium in the south of the city is a zoological garden specializing in fish from the North Sea and tropical coral reefs. The aquarium is located directly on the dune belt and can therefore draw fresh water from the North Sea. The zoo houses about 2,000 fish in 25 saltwater basins, some of which can be viewed from below from glass tunnels.
2. The swimming pool of a special kindThe Sylter Welle is a leisure pool with a Jacuzzi, children's pool, sports pool, wave pool and an extensive sauna area where you can do something for your body and soul. The basins are filled with water from the North Sea. In addition, there is a turbo slide, which ensures unlimited bathing pleasure. The popular Black Hole slide of the bath, which for the most part leads through unlit tunnels, is also a particularly fast ride.
3. Walk to the unique cemeteryThe Homeless Cemetery is the final resting place of nameless sailors washed up on the coast off Westerland. In 1888 the Romanian Queen Elisabeth zu Wied, who liked to spend her holidays in Westerland, had a mighty boulder erected in honour of the deceased. This is provided with a poem of the church song poet Rudolf Kögel. The cemetery also houses a monument to Heinrich von Stephan, which was ceremoniously unveiled in 1896.
4. Spa concerts on the beachAlong the six kilometre long beach promenade of Westerland, special spa concerts always take place in the summer evenings. The venue for the famous concerts is the Musikmuschel am Strand, an open-air concert venue with a shell-shaped stage that attracts countless visitors every year.
5. Visit church buildings worth seeingVisit the church of St. Niels, consecrated in 1637, an old village church with a tower that houses valuable sacral works of art. The church St. Nicolai is a neo-Romanesque city church from the early 20th century. A remarkable postmodern building is the church of St. Christopher, which was built in 1999. The Danish church Staldkirken, which is located in a Friesenhof from the year 1780, is also beautiful to look at.
