In the far east of Bavaria the administrative district and the holiday region Upper Palatinate runs along the state border with the Czech Republic. The western border forms Neumarkt about 40 kilometres east of Nuremberg. The southernmost point ends with the village Neufahrn and in the north Marktredwitz forms the border. The region, which covers 9,691.03 km², has about 1 million inhabitants. The most populous cities are Regensburg, Weiden, Amberg and Neumarkt.

Upper Palatinate for hikersThe varied nature of the Upper Palatinate enables hikers to take part in 74 official tours. Among the special features of the region are a multitude of challenging trails that require physical fitness. These include the 204-kilometre "Altmühltal Panoramaweg", which overcomes 5300 metres in altitude and leads from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim. An easy tour is the 12th stage of the "Jurasteig", which measures 26.8 kilometres and 658 metres in altitude. The trail leads from Dietfurt to Riedenburg.
During the Cold War, the Upper Palatinate was a strategic military base for the US army due to its proximity to the Czech Republic and the GDR.

In Donaustauf east of Regensburg there is the Walhalla Memorial, named after Walhall, the Hall of the Fallen in Nordic Mythology and one of the most important German national monuments. Already in the 19th century, under King Ludwig I, the magnificent temple served as a memorial site to visit the busts of the honoured persons in rooms lined with marble. Also the old town of Regensburg with the cathedral and the stone bridge is definitely worth a visit.
Upper Palatinate Open-Air MuseumIn Neusath-Perschen, the Upper Palatinate Open-Air Museum presents the everyday life and work of the Upper Palatinate people 300 years ago. In 50 reconstructed houses you will gain insights into the living, working and building of the ancestors. In addition, typical farm animals of the time live here, such as geese, goats, pigs and horses.
Bayernwald ZooThe only zoo in the Upper Palatinate is located in Lohberg. It is home to 400 animals of 100 species. Visitors can see lynxes, beavers, donkeys, otters and red deer. The complex also includes a wolf enclosure, a petting zoo, nature trails and aquariums.
