Hidden Gems for the Azores
Find great things to do on the Azores
The Azores are nine beautiful islands in the south of Europe. The Azores has pretty much everything you need for a good trip: from spectacular scenery, delicious food and deserted beaches to dozens of hiking trails and stunning viewpoints. In our travel guide you will find great things to do on the Azores.
1. Hidden Gem Azores: Lagoa do Fogo
‘Lagoa do Fogo’ translates to ‘Lake of Fire’ is one of the most beautiful sight on the island of São Miguel. This spectacular crater lake is part of the Natural Reserve of Lagoa do Fogo, and sits within the Agua de Pau stratovolcano. The imposing blue lake is about 2 km long and 1 km wide and has crystal clear water. There a number of viewpoints, which allow you to absorb spectacular views of the lake. The perfect time to visit is during the early hours of the morning when the lake is still covered by light fog. But make sure to check the weather before, as it can also be quite foggy and rainy all day long.

2. Hidden Gem Azores: Caldeira Velha
Located a quick 25-minute drive outside of Ponta Delgada, Caldeira Velha is on the lush island Sao Miguel and is absolutely not to be missed. Here you will find a stunning landscape and a natural hot spring. After some long hours of hiking, there is nothing better than relaxing and taking a bath in the thermal pools, one of which is connected to a gorgeous waterfall. Even if you have to pay a little entrance fee for the Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Centre, it is worth a trip!

3. Hidden Gem Azores: Cella Bar
If you are looking for an extraordinary and sophisticated place for a drink, then this a good spot. The Cella Bar, in the municipality of Madelena on the island of Pico, is a tapas restaurant and a bar in one. It is divided into two buildings – a remodelled barn with volcanic stone walls, and a bulbous timber extension. The food might be a bit pricey but it is totally worth it to come here for a drink with a view. During summertime, you are invited to enjoy a cocktail or coffee on top of the wooden building of the bar while during winter you can watch the stormy sea from the cozy interior. On some weekends, there is even live music.

4. Hidden Gem Azores: Miradouro Lagoa Do Canário
This viewpoint is another must-see on the beautiful island Sao Miguel. On the way to Sete Cidades, a breathtaking volcanic landscape, you pass by various points that offer spectacular views of the immense volcanic crater and its lakes nestled among its steep walls . Our favorite viewpoint is the Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, which is about 15 minutes away from the parking lot at Lagoa do Canário. There are several beautiful hiking trails in the area. So get on your hiking gear and enjoy the beautiful nature.
