If you’ll be visiting the lake in the summer, you’ll definitely want to cool off from the heat with a refreshing dip in the lake. There are several public beach access points along Highway 28 where you can jump in and have a swim. These beach access points also typically have bathroom facilities and picnic areas as well.

The nearby Nantahala River is a popular spot for whitewater rafting. If you’ve never tried it before, this is an excellent place to start. This long winding hike through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is suitable for all skill levels. If you want to hike the entire thing it’s around 10 miles in and out, and it trails alongside Twentymile Creek for most of the way. If you just want to hike to the waterfall, it’s a much shorter journey. Several other trails, including the Appalachian Trail intersect with this one. Around 5 miles into the hike there is a fire tower where you can enjoy scenic views from the top.

The Tunnel To Nowhere is set inside the nearby Great Smokey Mountain National Park. It’s a scenic drive to get there and there is ample parking. You can use the well-maintained walking path to reach the tunnel which goes through a peaceful forested area and then walk through the long tunnel. Be sure to go early in the day or bring a flashlight because there isn’t a lot of natural light inside the tunnel.
