Hermosa Beach, CA, is also a great place for arts lovers to visit. The Fiesta Hermosa brings painters, musicians and theatrical performers to town on Memorial Day, there are plenty of hip galleries to explore, and it’s all a short drive from LA’s studios, museums and theaters.

There’s hardly a better base to use as a springboard for explorations of LA. You can tour the coast from Santa Monica to San Clemente, see Hollywood and Beverley Hills – and be back in time for an hour or two on the beach as the sun sets.

Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach are linked by a flat, easy cycle path, and even the least experienced cyclists will enjoy following its route along the Pacific coast.

Summer is the most popular time to visit Hermosa Beach, but be aware of a few local climatic quirks. Most importantly, June and early July are warm, but foggy. This won’t totally ruin your trip, but the brilliant sunshine and views of July and August are stunning, so it’s probably better to schedule your visit then.

If you intend to drive around Hermosa Beach and LA in general, it helps to keep rush hour in mind. Generally speaking, the highways into and out of town are best avoided between 5:00 and 10:00, and 15:00to 19:00, when they become snarled up with traffic, and nobody wants to waste their vacation time in long queues of automobiles.

Timing your visit to coincide with local events makes a lot of sense. Memorial Day is a particular highlight in Hermosa Beach, CA, as it sees the Fiesta roll into town.
