Koh Phangan (also Koh Pha-ngan) lies as a Thai island in the Gulf of Thailand within the Pacific Ocean. With its settlement east of the Isthmus of Kra, Koh Phangan is located about 60 kilometres northeast of the Thai mainland. With approximately 125 square kilometres, the second largest island after the neighbouring Samui archipelago and the sister island Koh Samui, the interior of the island is largely characterised by mountain landscapes, jungle and natural vegetation. The capital, and thus the most important port of Koh Phangan, is Thong Sala, from where there are regular ferry connections to the mainland.
