Via the road built in 1951 you can reach the Free Republic of Saas-Fee by car, as the destination is called in many travel brochures. However, the alpine village itself is car-free. It is best to park your car on the outskirts of town and drive to your vacation rental in an electric car.

Beyond the mountain range lies Italy, where, however, there are no direct traffic routes. Near the resort, which is 1,798 metres above sea level, are Saas-Almagell, Saas-Grund and Saas-Belgen. These municipalities complement the Saas-Fee offer, for example with the minigolf course and the small lake in the centre of Almagell. Due to its geographical location, many slopes in the ski region are guaranteed to snow during the cool season. At the glacier, which once reached as far as the village, skiing is even possible in summer. Many tourists control the well-connected railway station of the municipality of Visp in Upper Valaisan, from which a post bus departs to Saas-Fee, 26 kilometres away.

The first hotels in Saas-Fee opened in the middle of the 19th century and mainly accommodated adventurous mountain climbers. With a mountain guide, however, even trained hikers without previous alpine knowledge can climb the 4,027 metre high peak of Allalin today. In total, the network of regional hiking trails covers 350 kilometres and the cleared winter trails 60 kilometres. For a relaxed walk you will find routes as well as for courageous outdoor activities. Alternatively, many of the signposted routes in the Saas Valley can be explored by mountain bike.

When you and your family rent a holiday apartment in Saas-Fee, all generations look forward to a varied stay. For example, the municipality combines an organized mountain tour with gold panning on the mountain river and offers a photo rally where hikers have to find 20 places in nature. In addition, an active holiday can be combined with excursion destinations such as glacial lakes, the Mattmark dam or the Hannigalp cheese dairy. Parents can also take a break for two. The community organizes a children's animation and children's discos independently of hotels.

Ski lifts, mountain railways and the Metro-Alpin subway, the highest in the world, open up an extensive area for skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing. The Mittelallalin, for example, reaches a height of 3,456 metres. This is why sportsmen and -women are happy about partly very extensive descents with a length of 14 kilometres. The toboggan runs also lead 11 kilometres through the snow-covered landscape. In winter, holidaymakers in the region will find 150 kilometres of prepared trails of all levels of difficulty, while in summer the Fee glacier is recommended for fun on the slopes. Ice rinks, a freestyle park for fun sports and activities such as snowshoe tours complete the range of activities on offer during the cold season.

The world's largest accessible ice grotto is located at 3,500 metres at the top station of the Alpin-Express gondola lift. Approximately 70 meter long tunnels allow you to explore the 2000 year old ice of the glacier from the inside. The impressive adventure is complemented by extraordinary ice sculptures and an avalanche staging that can be captured with all the senses.

Saas-Fee has another world record for your holiday in store: the highest revolving restaurant is located at the Mittelallalin mountain station. If you enjoy a delicious refreshment, you can admire the mountain massifs from all perspectives within an hour.
