In its westernmost point you will find Punta Arenas, where one of the most famous US Navy bases used to be located. Where to start? Vieques has dozens of amazing beaches to explore and perfect for every occasion. If you are travelling with small children, Media Luna and Sun Bay beach are perfect due to their easy access and shallow waters. If, on the other hand, you are on a honeymoon, you also have small, isolated beaches like Caracas beach to enjoy. Vieques for history loversClosed to tourists until less than two decades ago due to the presence of a US military base, Vieques is slowly but steadily opening up to the world and embracing its long and rich history. From pre-Columbian settlements to remains of the Spanish colonial era, there are plenty of historical sites to explore which will give you a feeling of how the winds of change have been blowing here. Want to find out more? Rent a car or a scooter and explore the Puerto Ferro Archeological 0Site or the Fortin Conde de Mirasol (Fortin Vieques), a fort turned into a museum, where you will find out how important this island was for colonial powers. For a taste of the island’s more recent history, you can stop by the US Navy Bunkers or the wreckage of a destroyer sunk during WWII.
Mosquito Bay owes its name to a pirate’s ship, not to the bloodsucking insects
