Location and orientation
Strand is a municipality in the west of Norway, located in Rogaland in the district Ryfalke. The municipality on the southern edge of the Boknafjord lies opposite the town of Stavanger. The centre is Jørpeland with about 6.500 inhabitants, the next biggest village is Tau with about 3.000 inhabitants.
Between fjords and lakesStrand borders Hjelmeland to the north and Forsand to the south. In the southwest, the two islands Idse and Idsal between Høgsfjord and Idsefjord belong to the municipality. The small islands of Heng and Sør-Hidle lie in the Boknafjord between the beach and Stavanger. The lakes Tysdalsvatnet, Bjørheimsvatnet and Vostervatnet also belong to the beach.
Things to know
On 1 May, the inhabitants of Jørpeland and Tau compete against each other in a big race, the so-called Strandamila. By bike or on foot it goes over the motorway. The race attracts several hundred spectators every year.
Mountain biker Gunn-Rita Dahle, gold medallist at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, comes from Strand.
Top travel tips
The white church of Strand in the village of Tau is a landmark of the region. The wooden church was built in 1874 by the architect Franz von der Lippe. Around 350 people can be accommodated in the interior.
2. Nature park on the island Sør-HidleThe island of Sør-Hidle is a popular destination for holidaymakers. The tropical nature park Flor og Fjære attracts around 30,000 guests a year. Between May and September, extensive gardens open here. Guided tours through the park are available at lunchtime and in the evening. You can have a snack in one of the many restaurants in the garden.
3. The beaches of JørpelandJørpeland is the largest town in Strand municipality and at the same time a tourist centre. Directly in front of the city there are popular beaches. For example, a vacation rental in Jørpeland is just a few steps away from the beaches of Barkavika and Nordlys. If you don't want to swim, you can play volleyball, children can play on the beach of Nordlys on the large playground.
