Location and orientation
The island of New Zealand is a state in the southern Pacific. It consists of a North Island and a South Island. Many smaller islands also belong to New Zealand. Wellington on the North Island is the capital of the island state. Other important cities are the university town of Hamilton, Auckland, Christchurch and the wine-growing town of Gisborne.
Travelers and Activities
New Zealand has a coast of about 15,000 kilometres, where you will find countless beautiful beaches. The best in the country are in and around Whangarei. But not only by the sea, but also inland you will find unique waters for the jump into the cool water. Take a trip to Lake Tekapo, for example, where a turquoise lake awaits you, nestled in an imposing mountain backdrop.
A paradise for hikersThe island of New Zealand is known for its unique natural landscape, which you can explore best while hiking. You can hike all over the island state. A special feature, however, is the Abel Tasman National Park, which is one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the country. Located in the northwest of the South Island, it offers a jungle-like forest, stunning views and tranquil beaches.
Did you know that English is not an official language of New Zealand? Instead, Te Reo Maori and sign language are regarded as official languages. However, English is spoken by almost all New Zealand residents.
Top 3 travel tips
One of the most popular tourist attractions is the film village of Hobbingen near Matamata on the North Island. Parts of the three Hobbit movies by director Peter Jackson were shot here. Here you can see for example the inn "Zum Grünen Drachen", a water mill and of course the famous Hobbit houses.
2. Culture in its most original formA New Zealand holiday naturally also involves getting to know the Maori culture and traditions a little better. In the Maori village of Whakarewarewa in Rotorua you will be taken into the world of the New Zealand natives, with their traditional dances and songs, where authenticity is of great importance. The performances are held without much lighting or stage technology and are more reminiscent of a big neighbourhood festival.
3. Visit sea giantsOn your New Zealand trip you should not miss a whale tour. Although whales can also be spotted from the North Island, the actual whale-watching centre is Kaikoura in the south. There are only a few places in the world where you can see sperm whales. These marine mammals can grow up to 15 metres long and dive deep into the sea in search of food. A sperm whale observation is possible in Kaikoura all year round. Humpback whales can be seen from December to March and orcas from June to July.
