Location and orientation
The Moroccan metropolis of Tangier lies west of the Strait of Gibraltar on the North African coast. The city was founded in the 5th century BC by the Carthaginians. Compared to other Moroccan cities, Tangier has a Mediterranean character, which can be seen in the architectural monuments. The airport Tanger-Boukhalef is located south of the city.
According to legend, Hercules, to whom a cave near Cape Espartel was dedicated, split the earth in Tangier and thus created the Strait of Gibraltar.
Top 3 travel tips
At the highest point of the medina there is the fortress-like quarter Kasbah, the oldest part of Tangier. A labyrinth of alleys with shops of all kinds awaits you. Northwest of the Grand Socco square stands the Bab Fahs, the large main gate of the city wall. The gardens of the Mendoubia Park extend right next to it. And these include old cannons as well as about 800 years old Dragon trees.
2nd museum in the palace Dar El MakhzenVisit the Musée des Antiquités above the ferry port on the Kasbah rock. The eastern city gate Bab Haha leads you directly there. This museum is housed in the former kitchen rooms of a sultan's palace. On display here are Stone Age finds, burial objects, lead sarcophagi, urns from the necropolis of Marshan as well as legacies from the time of the Romans, Portuguese and British. Also worth seeing is the throne and reception hall with Artesonado ceiling.
3rd visit to the Grand Socco bazaarAt the edge of the medina is the Grand Socco, the largest bazaar in Tangier. You can buy traditional souvenirs at the market, including woollen blankets, carpets, silver tableware and gold jewellery. In addition to the large selection of goods, you will also see wonderful performances by street artists such as fakirs, magicians, dancers and snake charmers.
