Holidays in Playa del Carmen
Location and orientation
Mexico is known for many things: its fiery food, eternally long beaches, impenetrable rainforests and of course everywhere the remains of the Inca and Mayan cultures. Playa del Carmen is located on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, about 70 km north of the spring break Mecca Cancun. Here you will also find the nearest airport in the area. Tulum, known for the largest Mayan pyramid in Mexico, is located about 60 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen.
The week before Ash Wednesday is "Canival" - and this is very different from our carnival. The parades with hot dancers are an absolute must-see!
Top 3 travel tips
There is always something going on at the beach of Playa del Carmen - literally any time of day. Water sports are very important here: you can sail, drive a motor boat, try your hand at water skiing or simply race across the turquoise blue water in a banana boat. In the evening we go to the Quinta Avenida, which runs parallel to the beach. Here you will find everything you need for a fun evening, from a restaurant to a night club and numerous souvenir shops. Check out the many streetfood stalls that offer traditional Mexican snacks - spit-roasted scorpion and grilled locusts included.
2. A trip to TulumTulum, like Playa del Carmen, is located on the Riviera Maya and is therefore one of the few Maya sites directly on the water. Tulum means translated as "fortress", but Tulum had much more tasks than just protecting the population. So also the Maya calendar was "developed" here by star observation, which caused so much excitement at the beginning of the 2000s. The most famous - and highest - building of Tulum is the Castillo (castle), but much more beautiful is actually the "Temple of the Wind God" (Templo del Dios del Viento), that is emblazoned on a hill directly above the water.
3. Diving on CozumelAre you interested in a day trip? Then leave your vacation rental behind, take the ferry and cross over to Cozumel, a beautiful island off the coast. Cozumel is especially known for its excellent diving areas. Already Jaques Cousteau appreciated the coral reefs in front of the beaches.
