In the extreme east of the country, the urban area of Cancun extends on the Yucatán peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. The metropolis with about 722,000 inhabitants is located in the Municipio Benito Juárez and is one of the most visited cities in the world. Cancun is located on the Caribbean Sea on the Riviera Maya.

Cancun is divided into two urban areas. On the one hand, the historic old town of El Centro, where numerous cultural sights, markets and romantic alleyways characterise the cityscape. On the other hand, there are the seemingly endless beaches that are located at the Boulevard Kukulcán and especially on the island Isla Cancun that is located in front of it. 23 kilometres of white Caribbean sandy beach with palm trees and crystal blue sea can be found at the beach sections Playa Las Perlas, Playa Delfines or Playa Linda.
In the Mayan language the city is called can cún, which means snake's nest.

In the south of Isla Cancun there is one of the most important finds of pre-Columbian times. The ruins of El Rey were built in the late post classical period and date from around 1300-1500 A.D.. The archaeological site comprises 47 settlements, palatial houses and religious squares. Valuable excavations such as murals, shells or bones are housed in the Cancun City Museum.
2. Art on diving stationSince 2009, the National Marine Park has been a unique underwater museum that brings nature into harmony with art objects. In the Museo Subacuático de Arte, 477 sculptures were sunk into the ocean that can only be reached during a dive or by submarine. The museum is a magnet for the public and at the same time supports the formation of artificial coral reefs that grow on the art objects.
3. Colourful hustle and bustleAt the eastern edge of the old town is the famous street market Mercado 28, which reflects the authentic life of the Mexicans. Here you can stroll between art dealers, vegetable stalls, herb shops and clothing shops or buy typical souvenirs.
