Location and orientation
Turin is located in the Piedmont region in the northwest of Italy. With almost 900,000 inhabitants, it is the fourth largest city in the country. It is only about 100 kilometres to Switzerland in the north and to France in the west. From Germany, the easiest way to get to Turin is by car via Chur through the San Bernardino tunnel or via Zurich/Basel and the Sankt Gotthard tunnel. Alternatively, Lufthansa offers a direct flight from various airports to Turin/Caselle Airport. Turin itself has an urban railway network.
Turin is regarded as the city of cinema: in 1914 the very first film ever was shot here: "Cabiria".
Top 3 travel tips
A highlight of the sightseeing tour through the old town is without question the famous medieval building Palazzo Madama. This is in Piazza Castello. Today it houses a museum of ancient art. Opposite the Palazzo Madama is the Teatro Regio opera house. In Piazza Castello there is also the Church of San Lorenzo and the Royal Palace Palazzo Reale.
2nd Mole Antonelliana - Turin's landmarkThe 167.50 meter high building is the most famous landmark of Turin. Once planned as a synagogue at the end of the 19th century, the Mole Antonelliana is now used as a film museum. A trip in a glass elevator to the top of the building is unforgettable. Here you can enjoy an incomparable view over all of Turin.
3rd Piazzetta Reale and Dom San GiovanniAbsolutely worth seeing are the ancient monuments of the Piazzetta Reale. Cross the archway on the left and you will find yourself next to the Cathedral of San Giovanni with its fascinating Renaissance façade. Inside the cathedral there is also the shroud of Christ. Leaving the Cathedral and turning right, you can admire the last documents of Turin from the Roman period, the remains of the walls of the town of Porta Palatina.
