What makes it even more attractive is the fact that these places can only be reached by a vintage cable car covering the route between Mazzeo and Lido Spisone. Taormina is a town with a rich historical heritage of priceless value. Undoubtedly, most of its monuments date from the Middle Ages, with the Duomo and Corvaja Palace being the most representative of this era. However, there are many others even older that are preserved in very good conditions, such as the Greek Theater (3rd century BC), the Odeon (1st century BC) or La Naumachia (also from the century I a. C). Plan your stay in Taormina and it will take you very little to reach them!

We are talking about a different kind of theater. In Taormina you can enjoy a unique privilege of attending a show, performance or concert at an authentic Greek Theater in a stunning setting where the mountains backdrop confers them a special touch. Due to its good estate of preservation, the theater continues to host dance, music and theater performances. Most of the events happen during the summer, when the weather is more friendly and the Taormina Arte Festival takes place. Especially advisable to attend a show at night time, when the place and lights blend in offering a unique and memorable experience. A few shows also take place at certain times of year.

Spend a day in the small beautiful island of Isla Bella located in the bay of Taormina. To get to the island, you don’t need to get on a boat. Can you guess how you will be able to get to the shore of this unique tiny islet? Well, the answer is very simple. Wait for the tide to go low and cross over. That’s right! Just walk to the other side. Unless you cannot wait, there is the option to hire a boat and access the stunning paradise that offers this island. A natural oasis protected by the government, due to the great value of the natural places in it. So, if you visit it, be aware of this precious bit of land and leave nothing behind but footprints.

A 50 minute drive from Taormina, you reach Alcantara Gorge. This place is of special interest because of the geology. The gorge is more than 82 feet high and about 10 feet wide. As we have mentioned, this narrow canyon is unique because of the formation of its walls. Those were the result of several lava flows, coming from Etna, more specifically, from the north slope of the volcano. When the lava and the ashes cooled down, in contact with the river they shaped what we see today. The waters in this area are extremely cold so only a few attempt to swim in them. Maybe you will fancy trying to do so.

No visit to Taormina is complete without a visit to the famous Etna Volcano. Starting in the city, there are many offers and tours to spend a day visiting this marvel of nature. The expedition takes you to the foot of the volcano and then, the guide and the driver, to take you to the crater with suitable SUVs after providing you with the proper equipment. This is by far the safest option to visit the Etna unless you prefer to drive there yourself. The volcano is a short 50 minute drive from Taormina. We highly recommend this visit!

For lunch or dinner, go to Ristorante Granduca Taormina. Enjoy the fabulous pizza, excellent fish-based recipes and raise your taste buds while enjoying the views and the shade of the lemon trees of the terrace. Drizzle some olive oil on the bread and save some room for pudding. You will not resist the temptation of its refreshing lemon slush served with Sicilian Cassata or hot buns. And for coffee lovers, Café Mocambo is where everybody enjoys a nice cafe like Elizabeth Taylor or Richard Burton did some years ago.
