The island Bali belongs to Indonesia and lies in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The capital of Bali is Denpasar. The island belongs to the western Small Sunda Islands and lies about two and a half kilometres away from Java. Bali also includes the islands of Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan.
Different landscapes on BaliIn the west of the island the tropical wet forest, also called monsoon forest, is still largely preserved. This original island landscape is now protected by the Bali Pararat National Park. Bali also has different climate zones, such as the tropical dry forest in the north, the tropical cloud forest in the mountains, the humid savannah in the south, the mangrove forests in the southeast and the lava landscape near volcanic craters. The cultivated landscape occupies the largest part of the island today.
On Bali there are different calendar systems. In addition to the Gregorian calendar, these include the Pawukon calendar, which repeats the sequence after 210 days, and the Shaka calendar, which always determines the New Year's Day on the new moon after the equinox.

In Bali the climate is characterized by warm temperatures and high humidity. Heavy monsoon rains usually fall from November to March, with precipitation in the mountains higher than in the coastal region. The average annual temperature is between 24 and 34 degrees Celsius. In the dry season from May to October, it is between 29 and 34 degrees in the coastal region and between 10 and 20 degrees in high altitudes.

Bali has some temples worth seeing, like the sea temple Tanah Lot, the temple at a steep cliff Pura Luhur Ulu Watu and the sea temple Pura Ulun Danu Bratan in Danau Bratan. The most important temple on the island is the Hindu mother temple Pura Besakih. This temple was founded in the 8th century and is located on the southwest slope of the volcano Gunung Agung, at about 950 meters altitude. Here you can see more than two hundred buildings, open pavilions, multi-level temple towers and many shrines.
2. Enjoy Balinese cuisineBalinese recipes consist of many different spices, some of which make for very spicy dishes. Among the most important ingredients are coconut, its milk and curry. These components are often mixed with different vegetables and refined with turmeric, ginger and cardamom. The side dish consists almost always of rice, sometimes also of potatoes or glass noodles.

The island of Bali with its many coral reefs is one of the best diving areas in the world. Most reefs can be found off the southwest and northeast coasts. There are also beautiful diving areas in the bay before Tulamben, where you can also visit the wreck of the USAT Liberty, which sank here in 1942. Seahorses, pufferfish, lobsters and shrimps can also be seen during your dive.
