Things to know
Hameln gained fame through the legend of the Pied Piper, who was to take care of the local plague of rats in 1284. After the rats had followed the flute melody of the rat catcher into the Weser and drowned, the inhabitants refused however the wages to the man. And so one day he returned in disguise and lured 130 children from the city, who were never seen again, with his melody.
Regular eventsHameln's programme of events is as much influenced by the Pied Piper saga as the cityscape itself. Especially famous is the Pied Piper open-air game, in which citizens and children of the town play the saga in historical costumes. As in the case of the musical "RATS", the performances of the open-air theatre take place once a week from May to September. The programme of events is rounded off by numerous concerts and the Christmas market.
Hameln is also officially called the Pied Piper City.
