Vacation in Deauville
Location and orientation
Deauville is located in the heart of Normandy and proves why it is one of the most popular holiday regions in France. On the one hand the rough side of the Normans, with wild waves and fresh sea air, on the other hand the opulent elegance of this prestigious seaside resort. The old city centre lies on a slope above the sea, the Mont-Canisy, on the left bank of the mouth of the Touques into the English Channel. Deauville is about halfway between Le Havre and Caen - both about 60 kilometres away.
In June the International Sailing Week takes place in Deauville, with numerous regattas and of course a cultural programme.
Top 3 travel tips
In the 19th century, the famous Duke of Morny had not only one but two racecourses built in Deauville. The larger one is the Hippodrome de la Torques. Here horse races take place regularly, which are not only a sporty event, but also a "seeing and being seen" for the fine society. It is a lot of fun to watch the horses on the one hand and the elegantly dressed visitors on the other hand. And who knows, maybe lucky goddess Fortuna will play along and the trip to the totalizers is worthwhile to improve the holiday budget. It's worth a try.
2nd Les Planches - the wooden beach promenades of DeauvilleIf a view in Deauville is unforgettable, it is the wooden promenade that stretches almost 700 metres along the beach. The promenade is dotted with numerous sunshades, which shine in the city colours red and blue. Even the beach cabins for changing clothes remain in the memory, even if only because of their names: those of Hollywood greats. And some of them had vacation rentals here.
3. A stroll through the covered market installationsAnother attraction that makes Deauville so special is its market square. It is covered with wooden beams and planks and is supposed to represent a Calvados barrel - the local speciality. It is also a tribute to the craftsmanship of the builders. So it is no wonder that there are not only market stalls with fresh fruit, vegetables and fresh flowers, but of course also some really first-class stalls with wonderful handicrafts. And the pieces really have it in them, they are so beautiful and special. The ideal place to do some real shopping.
