Location and orientation

Holiday surrounded by volcanic mountain massifs

Until 2015, the Auvergne was an independent administrative region with a total of 1.34 million inhabitants. Today it is part of the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region and has its administrative headquarters in the capital Clermont-Ferrand, which is located in the heart of the Auvergne. The Auvergne comprises four departments: Puy-de-Dome, Cantal, Haute-Loire and Allier. The region is characterised by the central volcanic massifs that run through the area: the Chaine des Puys and Monts Dore volcanic chains not only make Auvergne one of the most popular hiking and mountain biking areas in central France, but also invite you to go skiing in winter. Clermont-Ferrand is located about 420 kilometres from the French capital Paris and takes about 3 hours by train. The nearest major city is Lyon, 166 kilometres to the east. Clermont-Ferrand has its own airport, which is almost exclusively served by French airports.
