The archipelago consists of 15 islands, nine of which are inhabited, such as São Vicente, Santo Antão and Boa Vista. The capital of the Republic of Cape Verde is Praia. Special features of flora and faunaThe landscape of the Cape Verde Islands is largely characterised by large dunes and mangroves. Top 3 travel tips
If you have always wanted to look into the crater of an active volcano, then the best thing to do is a guided walk to the 2,829 metre high Pico do Fogo on the island of Fogo. Starting point of the summit tour is the village Chã das Caldeiras. On the way there you will pass hot fumaroles that emit water and sulphur steam.
2. Drive to the UNESCO Old TownVisit the city of Cidade Velha, the former capital of Cape Verde, located on the island of Santiago. Today the town is a picturesque fishing village where coconuts, sugar cane and mangoes are grown. It also has a historic centre, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. Visit the early 16th century pillory that commemorates the history of the slave trade. Further sights are the church Nossa Senhora do Rossario, the ruins of the cathedral as well as the Forte Real de São Filipe.
3. Explore the unique desert landscapeThe Deserto de Viana sandy desert on the island of Boa Vista lies between the towns of Sal Rei and Rabil. The sand of the 20 km long and four to five km wide dune comes from below the water of the Atlantic Ocean, which is carried to this place by wind drifts. A natural spectacle of a very special kind!
Cape Verde is sometimes used as a backdrop for internationally renowned film productions, such as the 1998 feature "Fintar o Destino" or the 2002 "Nha Fala - My Voice".
