Hiawassee is surrounded by stunning nature with woods, waterfalls, creeks, and Appalachian Mountains everywhere you look. Thanks to its perfect weather and moderate elevation, this area is great for outdoor activities. For incredible panoramic views of the area, drive or hike up to Bell Mountain’s rocky summit. Try hiking through the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest to Brasstown Bald Mountain, the highest peak in Georgia at over 4000 ft. Or follow the 2.5 mile High Shoals Falls Trail to a gorgeous waterfall. Another waterfall within Chattahoochee is the majestic twin falls of Anna Ruby Falls less than half a mile from the main road. You won’t want to leave!

We have Lake Chatuge and the Hiawassee River to thank for the numerous water activities can be done here. Water sports lovers will enjoy swimming, Jet-skiing and stand-up paddleboarding. There are also many boating, canoeing and kayaking rental areas for those wanting to enjoy the liquid tranquility of this beautiful man-made lake. Boating tours are also available. Fishing is popular thanks to Hiawassee’s reputation as "the hidden jewel of trout fishing”.

Check out the Anderson Hall in Town’s County Park for a great concert with comfortable seats. Mountain Home Music is a smaller venue but has great acoustics and interesting artists playing music ranging from country to old-fashioned bluegrass. Meet local artists and admire their artwork at the many galleries scattered throughout the town. Also, every year, this majestic area hosts 100 local and national artists to compete in the Annual Hiawassee Festival of Arts. This exciting event includes jazz music compliments of The World Jazz & Music Society.

While in Hiawassee, you can’t avoid visiting Chatuge Lake, an artificial reservoir and recreation hotspot. One thing you must do in this area is visit the Hamilton Gardens. This huge botanical garden features over 3,000 plants including dogwood, azaleas and over 400 varieties of rhododendrons.

Just a 15-minute drive Northeast of Hiawassee to neighboring Hayesville, North Carolina, you’ll find Chunky Gal Stables. Open all year round, the friendly staff offer something for everyone including trail rides, riding lessons and training with awesome scenery. A great place for making memories with your kids. Be sure to make a reservation before coming.

Although this trail is relatively new and still expanding, it definitely should be part of your trip. This 15-mile trail, great for both mountain biking and hiking, starts in Hiawassee and leads right up into the peninsula. Visitors will see ridge tops, sandy beaches, and glimpses of Lake Chatuge.

This quaint town offers interesting and fun activities like, Lardworks Studio and Lasso the Moon Alpaca Farm where you’ll be able to visit a glass jewelry studio and take fiber arts classes. At the Alpaca farm, you can pet the tame Alpacas and learn everything about their upkeep. Don’t forget to check out their unique gift shop. Advance reservations are a must. Also, Butternut Creek Golf Course is a lovely place to golf nearby.

Stop at the Hiawassee Brew for signature beer and great food. This is a wonderful place to mingle with locals and enjoy the evening atmosphere. If you’d rather sip wine, drive over to Crane Creek Vineyards for wine-tasting amidst unbeatable scenery and delicious food. Also, don’t miss their Farmhouse Market featuring gourmet foods.

Hiawassee has several unique antique shops that will awaken the shopping spirit in you. Head over to Hiawassee Antique Mall for their huge selection of choice antiques and bargains where you’re sure to find what you’re looking for. Stop at Farm House Antiques for awesome, hard to find items and good deals. Mountain Quilts offers a variety of batiks and lovely quilts.

While you’re in the area, be sure to visit attractions like Georgia Mountain Fair. In this scenic fairground you’ll find great food, atmosphere, and music, right on the lake! Nearby Chatuge Beach is a great sandy beach for sunbathing, picnicking, and spending the afternoon with family.
