    Orientation

    A quiet island destination

North Myrtle Beach has a laidback personality with a family atmosphere that makes it perfect for vacations. Located in South Carolina, this small town was formed in 1968 when four local communities were merged together. Although now joined as one, the four communities of Crescent Beach, Ocean Drive, Cherry Grove, and Windy Hill still have their own individual characters. The town's beach is part of the long stretch of sandy coastline known as the Grand Strand.

    A 'sweet' place to be

The area now known as North Myrtle Beach was first settled by the Winyah and Waccamaw Native American tribes who named it Chicora or 'the land'. The name Myrtle Beach comes from the Sweet Myrtle Tree or crape myrtle which is native to the area. Grand Strand, the stretch of beach of which North Myrtle Beach is a part, got its name later in history. A journalist Claude Dunnagan first used the name in 1949 when writing his newspaper column.

    Getting there

Myrtle Beach International Airport is served by national airlines and is located approximately 15 miles south of the town's border. Bypass Highway 17 provides a direct route from the airport to North Myrtle Beach. Visitors arriving by car will use Interstate 95 before joining Highway 9.

    Activities

A destination for beach and water lovers

Sunbathing on family-friendly sandy beaches or swimming in safe waters are the major attractions of North Myrtle Beach while more energetic visitors can enjoy watersports such as jet skiing, banana boat rides, and parasailing. Also popular with summer visitors are deep sea or sports fishing.

    A golfer's destination

North Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas are rich in golf courses from championship-level open greens to beautifully pristine and challenging semi-private courses designed by world-class golfing pros. In fact, the area is home to over 100 courses. Wherever you choose to enjoy your round of golf, the green will be set in stunning countryside or coastal scenery.

    A spectral destination

The Ghosts and Legends Theater at Barefoot Landing, North Myrtle Beach has become an integral part of any visit to town. The whole family can enjoy spooky history while meeting Alice, the Gray Man and other local spirits in an award-winning live show that brings the haunted history of Grand Strand to life. If the theater has whetted your supernatural appetite then take the lantern-lit Myrtle Beach Ghost Walk one evening for more creepy tales.

Vanna White, best known as the Wheel of Fortune hostess was born in Myrtle Beach.
